Are you an organized, compassionate professional who thrives in a fast-paced healthcare environment? Join the newly established Surgical Family Lounge in the Kamin Tower and play a vital role in supporting patients, families, surgeons, and care teams throughout the surgical journey.

In this unique position, you will serve as the primary point of contact for families during surgical procedures, providing updates, coordinating communication with PACU staff and surgeons, and helping families navigate their loved one's care experience. Schedule Highlights

✅ Monday through Friday
✅ 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM
✅ No weekends
✅ Occasional holidays only

What You'll Do

As a Health Unit Coordinator, you'll help keep the unit running smoothly while ensuring families receive exceptional support and communication throughout the surgical process.

Family & Patient Support

  • Welcome and assist patients, family members, visitors, and staff.
  • Provide updates to families during surgical procedures.
  • Communicate with surgeons and PACU staff regarding patient status.
  • Direct families to inpatient units, discharge areas, and other destinations throughout the hospital.
  • Maintain a welcoming, supportive environment in the Surgical Family Lounge.

Communication & Coordination

  • Answer phones, manage paging requests, and facilitate unit communications.
  • Coordinate patient transports, tests, and procedures.
  • Maintain patient flow and update tracking systems accurately.
  • Enter physician orders and maintain medical records according to established policies.
  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams to support seamless patient care.

Unit Operations

  • Monitor and replenish office, patient, and family lounge supplies.
  • Maintain logs, reports, and department records.
  • Troubleshoot and report issues with office equipment and technology.
  • Ensure hospital policies, HIPAA regulations, and patient confidentiality standards are followed at all times.

Professional Growth

  • Support process improvements and departmental initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource and preceptor for new staff members.
  • Participate in projects, committee work, and ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture built on communication, collaboration, and respect.

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and computer applications. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. 
  • Completion of a Certified Health Unit Secretary course preferred. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside. 
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
