UPMC is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support the Cornea and Neuro-Ophthalmology team at the UPMC Vision Institute, located at 1622 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This role is ideal for a patient-focused professional who thrives in a fast-paced specialty practice and enjoys working closely with providers to deliver exceptional vision care. Responsibilities include obtaining patient histories, performing ophthalmic testing and diagnostic procedures, assisting physicians during examinations and treatments, documenting clinical information, and supporting efficient clinic operations. This position is scheduled for daylight hours Monday through Friday, with clinic hours ranging from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM and varying shift start times based on clinic schedules and patient needs. Responsibilities:
- History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
- Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
- Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
- Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Valid CPR certification
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Act 34
