Become a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor with the Department of Corrections (DOC) and bring your trade expertise to a hands-on and rewarding teaching role. You will work directly with inmates at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Huntingdon as they learn practical skills that prepare them for everyday tasks in the refrigeration field. This position lets you apply advanced technical knowledge while contributing to the reliable operation of essential facility equipment. This position focuses on supervising inmate workers and teaching the core skills needed to repair and maintain refrigeration equipment throughout the facility. You ensure standard work practices while overseeing repairs, preventive maintenance, and tool control. As a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Inmate Instruction: Teach refrigeration repair methods, demonstrate correct procedures, and guide inmates through hands-on work assignments
  • Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, repair, and replace parts on walk-in coolers, freezers, air conditioners, and related food service equipment
  • Preventive Tasks: Schedule maintenance, monitor system conditions, and document compressor levels, belt wear, temperature readings, and safety controls
  • Tool Control: Issue, collect, and track tools and materials while performing searches to maintain security and compliance
  • Record Keeping: Maintain logs for repairs, training progress, inventories, attendance, and material usage in line with facility requirements
  • Operational Oversight: Monitor work areas, enforce rules, check for contraband, and ensure safe practices during all work activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.

Special Requirements:

  • You must be in possession of an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by an approved provider.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
