Full-Time Registered Nurse – PACU | UPMC Mercy
Are you an experienced RN looking to care for complex patients in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment? UPMC Mercy is seeking a Full-Time Registered Nurse to join our Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) team. As a PACU nurse, you'll play a critical role in helping patients safely recover following surgical and procedural interventions while collaborating closely with anesthesia, surgical, and procedural teams.
This position offers the opportunity to care for a diverse patient population recovering from the OR, Neuro IR, IR, Endoscopy, Cath Lab, and Emergency Department. We welcome experienced RNs with at least one year of Critical Care or Emergency Department experience. A BSN is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities:
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve clinical quality, patient care, and workplace culture using evidence-based practice.
- Serve as a clinical leader and role model through expertise, mentorship, education, and participation in nursing peer review and shared governance.
- Lead and contribute to initiatives that enhance patient outcomes, workforce well-being, and unit performance.
- Demonstrate advanced assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills within the Relationship Based Care framework.
- Precept and mentor students, graduate nurses, and new hires while fostering continuous learning and professional development.
- Apply the nursing process to develop individualized, patient-centered plans of care that address physical, emotional, social, safety, and spiritual needs.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care and advocate for practice improvements.
- Maintain thorough documentation and support organizational goals related to patient safety, quality, and patient experience.
- Foster a positive, collaborative work environment by building relationships, promoting cultural awareness, addressing workplace concerns, and supporting work-life balance through effective prioritization and delegation.
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required; BSN preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to provide age-specific care across the lifespan and assess, interpret, and respond to patient needs based on developmental stages.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead others in the application of the nursing process and deliver high-quality patient care.
- Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with patients, families, physicians, providers, leaders, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment while managing multiple priorities and specialized equipment.
- Physical stamina, mobility, and manual dexterity required for patient care activities, including walking, standing, lifting, and positioning patients.
- Must achieve and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on annual Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluations.
- Within one year of hire/transfer, must complete an approved professional contribution aligned with department, hospital, or system goals or obtain and maintain a UPMC-approved nursing certification. Certification is not required for nurses holding a Master's in Nursing or DNP. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for certification if a BSN is held.
Licensure, Certifications & Clearances
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located or through a participating Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
- BLS/CPR certification (AHA standards) required within 30 days of hire.
- ACLS and PALS required within one year of hire or transfer.
- Act 34 Clearance required.
- UPMC-approved nursing certification preferred.
