Position Summary
Under the direction of the Manager of Operations, this position will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Allegheny Medical Examiner’s Office specialized operations, specifically safety, security and information management. This position is located at the County Morgue and will be required to work closely with the news media and will require being on call twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.
Overview
The Medical Examiner’s Office in Allegheny County is committed to delivering high quality professional forensic and laboratory services to the citizens of Allegheny County. Staff supports the obligation to investigate sudden, unnatural, and violent deaths with compassion for families and friends during their time of grief and provide analytical support to investigative agencies. The office applies current scientific methods for evidence analyses and investigations to effectively assist law enforcement, judicial court systems, the Public Defender’s Office and health environmental agencies.
Duties
- Provides operational oversight of the morgue operations through the development of strategic plans, policies and procedures to ensure that the goals and objectives of the office are met.
- Manages Autopsy, Forensic Investigators and Forensic Supervisor employees’ performance and professional development.
- Participates in the Quality Management System including, but not limited to, yearly management reviews concerning audit status, lab operations, and other pertinent items and reports this information to the accrediting body, support of internal and external audits, staff authorization and competency testing, deviation, conflict resolution, and non-compliance, as required.
- Delegates and assigns work by prioritizing and managing cases.
- Communicates with families and partners with law enforcement agencies on an as needed basis; serves as a point of contact for the office.
- Compiles reports related to cases and personnel as requested.
- Provides courtroom testimony.
- Prepares and manages staff schedules.
- Administers County and Office policies.
- Provides tours, lectures and attends meetings.
- Prepares and submits morgue purchasing requests.
- Performs other duties as requested.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in the Natural Sciences, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Risk Management, Health and Safety Sciences, or Forensic Science AND Three (3) years of related experience death investigation/forensic science setting to include one (1) year of supervisory/management experience.
- A Master’s degree in the Natural Sciences, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Risk Management, Health and Safety Sciences, or Forensic Science and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory position, security management or risk management is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Applicants must be able to possess and maintain a valid PA driver’s license.
