Join UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as a Full-Time Health Unit Coordinator supporting our dynamic Operating Room team. This role offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative surgical environment where you will play a critical role in patient flow, communication, and daily OR coordination. As a key point of contact, you will partner closely with surgical staff while supporting patients and families, ensuring seamless front desk operations and efficient case progression. Evening/night shift position with flexible start/end times; primarily supporting evening and overnight OR operations.

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintains par levels for supplies, forms, and downtime folders; rounds family lounge to ensure cleanliness and proper stocking.
  • Reconciles charges (e.g., custom braces, CRRT) and completes unit audits as directed.
  • Monitors noise levels, initiates quiet time, and adheres to patient care policies, HIPAA, and safety protocols.
  • Ensures timely, accurate communication by answering phones, paging, faxing, and distributing mail.
  • Greets and assists visitors, physicians, and staff professionally.
  • Utilizes hospital systems (eRecord, MARS, Medipac, Bedboard, Teletracking); updates Bedboard and communicates changes.
  • Enters and communicates physician orders accurately; maintains patient charts and identification materials per policy.
  • Coordinates unit activities including test/procedure scheduling, transport, errands, logs, and reports.
  • Maintains office equipment; submits and follows up on repair requests; reports Bedboard discrepancies.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Supports departmental improvements, takes ownership of assignments, and continuously develops skills.
  • Serves as a resource/preceptor; seeks support for complex tasks; participates in reviews, projects, and committees.
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience. Knowledge of medical terminology and computer applications. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Completion of a Certified Health Unit Secretary course preferred. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
