This position focuses on keeping tunnel facilities safe, clean, and fully operational while supporting incident response and traffic management. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Tunnel Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning, repair, and upkeep of tunnel structures and surrounding grounds
  • Incident Response: Assist motorists and first responders, remove debris, and restore safe traffic conditions
  • Traffic Monitoring: Observe tunnel conditions, traffic flow, and safety indicators to identify issues
  • Work Zone Setup: Deploy cones, signs, and barriers to set up safe work zones
  • Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, washing equipment, towing apparatus, and flood gates safely

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time position within a rotating 24/7 operational environment.
  • Work hours vary based on operational needs. Shifts can range from the following and will include a 30-minute lunch: 
    • 9:30 PM–5:30 AM 
    • 5:30 AM–1:30 PM 
    • 1:30 PM–9:30 PM
  • Travel and overtime are required.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,141 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
  • All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
  • Positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
