This position leads the fire safety program for facilities across the state, influences safety improvement projects for multiple agencies, and represents DGS for emergency planning and coordination. As the Fire Safety and Environmental Administrator, you will perform the following duties:
- Program Leadership: Determine priorities, approaches, and actions for department-wide fire, safety, and environmental operations and compliance activities
- Fire Safety Oversight: Maintain fire safety and related operations through inspections, evacuation drills, risk assessments, and corrective actions
- Compliance Administration: Direct efforts that address accident and illness prevention, ensure effective hazardous substance management and environmental compliance initiatives, and work with other leaders to bridge the gap between workers and management to foster a proactive safety culture
- Emergency Coordination: Serve as DGS’s representative to the PA Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) for coordinating emergency preparedness and response activities
- Improvement Projects: Collaborate with capital projects staff to incorporate fire and life safety requirements into designs and construction, ensuring effective asbestos abatement
- Team Supervision: Establish goals and direct workloads for safety supervisors, professionals, inspectors, and program staff to achieve consistent, thorough, and high-quality practices

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Essential employee – required to report to work during emergencies and office closings.
- Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch, and 24/7 on call
- Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to two days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- One year as an Administrative Officer 3 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Six years of experience in progressively responsible and varied office management or staff work, including experience in personnel management, budgeting, or procurement; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a four-year college or university; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Additional Requirements:
- You must hold, or obtain within the first year in this position, all of the following certifications/licenses/certificates:
- Asbestos Inspector License
- Asbestos Supervisor/Contractor License
- 40-Hour Hazwopper License/Certificate
- Permit Required Confined Space Entrant, Attendant and Supervisor Training
- You must have three or more years of experience supervising safety professionals, inspectors, or safety program staff.
- You must have experience in all of the following:
- conducting workplace safety inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and developing corrective action plans.
- investigating workplace incidents and conducting root cause analyses to prevent recurrence.
- developing or delivering employee safety training programs related to OSHA/UCC compliance, hazard communication, emergency preparedness, or workplace safety.
- managing environmental health and safety programs, including hazardous materials, chemical safety, environmental compliance, or asbestos-related activities.
- You must possess a current class C driver's license which is not under suspension.
- You must have management experience.
- You must have experience with fire safety management programs.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- Possess a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential
- Possess a bachelor's degree or higher in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a closely related field
- Have five or more years of experience managing a comprehensive occupational safety and health program for a large organization or multiple facilities
- Have experience administering Occupational Safety and Health Administration/Uniform Commercial Code (OSHA/UCC) compliance programs, including Hazard Communication (Right-to-Know), accident prevention, and workplace safety initiatives
- Possess any of the following professional safety certifications:
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
- Safety Management Specialist (SMS)
- Or another nationally recognized occupational safety certification
