UPMC Comprehensive Eye Service is hiring a full-time Ophthalmic Technician to join their team at Mercy. This is a Monday through Friday daylight position with hours between 7:30am to 5:30pm, dependent on clinic schedules. No evenings, weekends, and select holidays off!

If you have a passion for patient care and work well on a team, this opportunity is for you. This department provides different opportunities with various types of exams, such as simple follow ups from the walk-in clinic, diabetic eye exams, comprehensive eye exams, and cataract evaluations.

Purpose:
Obtain detailed information from patients and perform a variety of diagnostic tests to the eyes to aid in the diagnosis and treatment course.
Responsibilities:
 

  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family. Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuity. Lensometry: automated and manual. Pupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate. Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fields Ocular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus. Refractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each. Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare test. Angle assessment & dilation of pupils. Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions. Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day. Travel to other clinical sites.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. 
  • Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
  • Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred. 
  • Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Valid CPR certification
     
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
