The Department of Transportation, Somerset County Maintenance Organization is seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with strong problem-solving skills and pride in high-quality work. This position maintains, repairs, and inspects vehicles and construction equipment to ensure safe and dependable performance for Somerset County operations. The role supports fleet readiness through skilled mechanical work, diagnostics, and careful service documentation. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair: Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and other essential components
  • Preventative Maintenance: Complete servicing, diagnostics and adjustments to keep vehicles and equipment operating safely
  • Safety Inspections: Perform official state inspections and complete repairs needed to meet required standards
  • Diagnostic Work: Identify equipment issues using testing methods and tools to determine correct repair procedures
  • Field Adjustments: Make minor repairs and adjustments at job sites to support safe operation and reduce equipment wear
  • Record Management: Maintain detailed work orders, inspection forms, and equipment service records

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Shifts may vary due to operational and/or seasonal requirements
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent. 
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
