The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy consists of two schools, the School of Public Policy and Management and the School of Information Systems and Management and offers an academic experience unlike any other. We are searching for a Research Manager to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support by serving as the administrative and operational lead for CMU's activities on one or more state-scale worker-support demonstration projects, working closely with the PI and academic research team.

Core responsibilities will include:

Project management & coordination: Collaborating with the PI and research team on project priorities, strategy, and work plans. Managing tasks, timelines, and results using standard project management tools. Coordinating and attending meetings, taking notes, and tracking action items to completion. Coordinating logistics across CMU, state partners, and third-party contractors.

Research compliance & contracting: Managing IRB protocols, amendments, and continuing reviews in coordination with the Institutional Review Board at CMU. Ensuring project activities align with human subjects research requirements and data use agreements. Coordinating university contracting processes with state partners and external vendors, including subcontracts, data-sharing agreements, and procurement, in collaboration with CMU's Office of Sponsored Programs and Office of General Counsel as needed.

Financial management: Managing project budgets, payments, and financial relationships with third-party vendors and partners. Tracking expenditures and supporting financial reporting to funders when needed.

External and partner relations: Serving as a primary point of contact for communications with state agency partners, third-party contractors, and funders.

Communications & writing: Writing policy briefs, memos, and slide decks tailored to academic, state government, and general audiences.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and balance multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail; keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.

  • Capable of handling sensitive information, maintaining confidentiality, and exercising discretion.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, tailoring content and style for different audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • At least three years of project management experience.

Requirement:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.

  • Travel Requirements: You should be able to travel and work at off-campus locations occasionally and be willing to work outside normal business hours as needed.
