Position Summary

Reporting to the Financial Manager, the Staff Accountant monitors all financial transactions in the Department of Court Records, Criminal Division, involving the general ledger, balancing and reconciling bank accounts, escheating funds, and the daily operations of the financial matters in this Division. This position also ensures compliance with State and Local regulations and restrictions. 

Duties

  • Receives and deposits monies on a daily/monthly basis.
  • Performs monthly bank reconciliation of bank accounts; performs weekly/monthly check runs (refunds, restitution, and master account checks).
  • Assists in the development and implementation of updates in accounting procedures.
  • Monitors the internal controls for quality assurance.
  • Assist auditors by providing needed data and responding to inquiries.
  • Compiles data for vouchers to be prepared for reimbursements from the General Fund.
  • Prepares reports of collections for deposits to the General Fund.
  • Performs other related duties as requested or required. 

Knowledge

  • Bookkeeping/accounting procedures.
  • General office equipment. 

Skills

  • Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Accounting software package (journal entries, bank reconciliations, check preparation and printing, closing entries, appropriate adjusting journal entries, etc.). 

Abilities

  • Maintain accurate and concise accounting records.
  • Communicate professionally, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Work independently under general supervision.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills.
  • Lift and move up to 20 lbs. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • One (1) year of office experience which includes bookkeeping experience and/or using accounting software and applying math and fiscal skills.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status.

Residency

Allegheny County within 1 year.
