This position supports roadway safety by learning and performing audits, inspections, and review activities for motor carriers in Pennsylvania. The role helps maintain compliance with state and federal regulations through fieldwork, documentation, and coordination with enforcement personnel. As a Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Safety Audits: Conduct New Entrant Safety Audits both on-site and off-site to determine compliance
  • Vehicle Inspections: Select motor carrier vehicles, inspect equipment, review documents, and inform operators of required corrective action
  • Law Enforcement Support: Issue citations or warnings, prepare reports, and testify in judicial hearings as needed
  • Equipment Care: Operate assigned equipment and maintain vehicles in proper working condition
  • Training Activities: Attend required training, complete recertification tasks, and perform related duties
  • Violation Review: Refer complex or out-of-scope violations to supervisors or State Police Troopers

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are irregular shifts, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of mechanical experience, law enforcement-related experience, or post secondary school education; and a high school diploma or equivalency; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education that includes a high school diploma or equivalency.

Special Requirement:

  • You must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires possession or attainment of Basic MCSAP Certification during probationary period and maintenance of Certification for tenure in job.
  • This position requires possession or attainment of General Hazardous Materials Inspection Certification during probationary period and maintenance of Certification for tenure in job.
  • You must obtain MCSAP New Entrant Safety Auditor Certification during the probationary period and maintain Certification for tenure in job.
  • You must obtain active Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Police within the probationary period and maintain the same for the duration of employment in this job.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements: 

  • This job title has been identified as performing critical duties. Prior to placement in this job title, the selected candidate regardless of their current job, must submit a Report of Medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer.
  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
