Working closely with the Senior Manager, and a large team, the Communications Specialist II supports and executes Media Relations and Internal Communications strategies for assigned projects/beats. This position researches, develops, and promotes positive stories for internal and external audiences to advance UPMC's mission. The Communications Specialist II also writes, edits and produces a variety of media relations and internal content, including press releases, blog posts, other social media material, as well as internal messages and stories, following appropriate style and brand guidelines. Additionally, the Communications Specialist II assists with a wide variety of departmental support functions to ensure proper media reporting for leaders and executives, news release distribution, and other activities as required.
This position is based on site at the U.S. Steel Tower and follows a hybrid schedule, Monday through Friday during standard business hours. Occasional regional travel to other UPMC locations may be required.

Responsibilities:
Provide media relations support as assigned for UPMC service lines and facilities; Field media requests and proactively identify and pitch positive stories to local, national and trade media; Write and edit media materials following AP style.
Provide communications support to internal clients, providing consultation and strategic communications planning where appropriate.
Manage projects of increasing complexity, sensitivity, or importance to the organization.
Provide communications and support for hospital events, media opportunities, employee celebrations, community activities, and special initiatives at UPMC facilities.
Assist with press release distribution, web posting, media reports and other department-wide support activities as required.
Create employee-facing content, managing intranet sites and internal social channels, and helping drive employee engagement across the organization.
Travel to various UPMC sites
- Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field required.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a communications or public relations position or related field.
- Direct communications experience and or writing experience preferred.
- Must have knowledge of traditional and digital communications best practices, excellent communication, multitasking, organizational, research/interviewing, writing, grammar, and interpersonal skills.
