The Corrections Mail Inspector position with the Department of Corrections offers a unique opportunity to support safe and efficient operations within the institution. This position supports the safe and organized movement of mail throughout the institution while following all required policies and procedures. The work focuses on inspecting, processing, and delivering items in a careful and efficient manner. As a Corrections Mail Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

  • Mail Inspection: Inspect incoming and outgoing items to identify contraband and ensure compliance with postal and departmental rules
  • Item Retrieval: Collect mail from designated locations and coordinate its delivery to approved institutional areas
  • Record Keeping: Maintain logs of inmate property and document mail processing activities in accordance with regulations
  • Policy Awareness: Stay informed about changes to procedures that affect mail handling and apply updated requirements
  • Staff Response: Respond to inmate request forms and communicate with staff regarding mail concerns
  • General Duties: Carry out additional tasks that support effective mailroom operations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of clerical experience, including one year in the field of corrections; or
  • Any combination of experience and/or training which provides the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Successful completion of Basic Training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

Legal Requirements: 

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
