UPMC is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support the UPMC Optical Shop located at 3606 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. This Monday–Friday daylight position offers a schedule of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and requires 25–50% travel throughout the week. In this role, you will play a vital part in the patient care experience by performing ophthalmic screening and diagnostic testing prior to the patient’s visit with the provider, including refractometry, visual fields, pupil assessments, visual acuity testing, and patient history collection. Additional responsibilities include monitoring product expiration dates, maintaining contact lens trial inventories, and learning contact lens insertion and removal (I&R) instruction. Team members may also assist with front desk and optician-related duties as needed to ensure seamless patient care across the optical shop. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, adaptable professional who is eager to learn the responsibilities of multiple roles, support teammates during PTO or absences, and contribute to a positive, patient-focused environment.
Responsibilities:
- History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
- Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
- Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
- Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Valid CPR certification
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Act 34
