Join UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as a Part-Time Registered Nurse in the PACU, where you’ll play a critical role in caring for pediatric patients recovering from surgery and procedures in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment

  • Be part of a high-volume, collaborative unit recovering 50–70 patients daily from the OR, Procedure Center, Cardiac Cath Lab, and Interventional Radiology—caring for 1–2 patients at a time with close partnership alongside anesthesiologists
  • Schedule designed for balance and variety:
    • (2) 10-hour shifts per week with rotating schedule
    • Majority daylight hours: 0600–1600, 0700–1730, 0730–1800, 0800–1830, 0830–1900
    • Some evening coverage: 1500–0130
    • Includes call shifts and weekend rotation

  • We’re seeking experienced RNs with at least 1 year of experience in pediatric, peri-operative, surgical, ICU, or ER settings (candidates without this experience will not be considered; NICU-only experience not accepted)

Responsibilities:

  • Precepts and mentors students, graduate nurses, and new hires; identifies learning opportunities and promotes continuous improvement through feedback, education, and shared resources
  • Applies the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to deliver patient-centered, holistic care; sets daily goals and partners with patients and families
  • Communicates effectively with the care team; documents thoroughly and uses critical thinking to address clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual needs
  • Supports patient safety, quality, and experience goals using evidence-based practice and professional standards
  • Builds strong, respectful team relationships and contributes to a healthy, inclusive work environment
  • Identifies and drives clinical and workplace improvements; participates in innovation and quality initiatives
  • Serves as a professional role model and unit leader; contributes to peer review, shared governance, and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical judgment, leadership, and accountability in daily practice
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies and completes other duties as assigned
  • Minimum Experience: 4 years of RN experience required for Expert level
  • Education: BSN preferred
  • Professional Development:
    • Annual completion of a professional contribution aligned with department, hospital, or system goals and approved by the Unit Director
    • One of the following required:
      • UPMC-approved nursing certification within 1 year of hire/transfer (must be maintained), OR
      • Master’s in Nursing or DNP (certification not required), OR
      • If BSN is held, a Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for certification
  • Clinical Expectations:
    • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan
    • Assesses and interprets patient data to meet age-specific care needs
    • Provides care in accordance with department policies and procedures
    • Exhibits strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
    • Leads and applies the nursing process effectively in patient care
  • Performance Standards:
    • Must achieve and maintain a “Solid/Strong/Good” or higher on annual performance evaluations
  • Collaboration & Work Style:
    • Builds and maintains positive, professional relationships with leadership, physicians, providers, staff, patients, and families
    • Works effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Mobility and manual dexterity required
    • Ability to stand, walk, lift, and position patients frequently
  • Licensure & Certifications:
    • Current RN license in PA or a multistate compact license (with PA licensure required within 60 days if residency changes)
    • BLS or CPR certification (AHA-compliant with skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire
  • Clearances:
