Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Art is searching for a part-time (20 hours a week/600 hours over the academic year) Sculpture Intern. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. This entry-level position is ideal for someone familiar with wood and metal shop operations who can assist the current technician and help serve the larger School of Art community.
Core responsibilities will include:
Assist with supervision and administration of: wood shop, metal shop, mold making room and spray booth
Help operate and maintain equipment and facilities, which include wood shop, metal shop, mold making room and spray booth; minor repairs, cleaning, changing blades/abrasives, etc.
Help with training, overseeing and enforcement of safety rules and regulations, according to EH&S guidelines
Help manage student monitors
Assist students, faculty and staff with the proper and safe use of shops and equipment
Report supplies needs to the school Sculpture Technician
Assist with various School of Art projects
Support Doherty Hall technicians in research and development
Passion, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask while maintaining a high level of excellence are all vital qualities for this position. Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in Art (BFA or BXA) preferred – obtained or in process of obtaining.
Experience with woodworking and welding equipment
OSHA on the job Hazardous Materials Safety Training
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
