UPMC Vision Institute is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support our comprehensive ophthalmology clinic located at 1622 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This position works daylight hours Monday through Friday, with clinic schedules ranging between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM and varying start times based on patient care needs. The Ophthalmic Technician plays a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care by performing comprehensive patient workups, including refractions, documenting medical histories, and preparing patients for examination. Additional responsibilities include assisting with advanced ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic testing such as OCT, fundus photography, corneal topography, A-scans, and visual field testing. Candidates should thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment, demonstrate strong attention to detail, and be committed to providing outstanding patient service. Occasional travel (approximately 5%) to other UPMC Vision Institute locations may be required based on staffing needs.

- History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
- Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
- Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
- Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Valid CPR certification
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Act 34
