Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Heavy Equipment Supervisor, this position is responsible for safely operating and maintaining a wide variety of heavy equipment machinery used in construction, excavation, roadwork, and on various projects. This position will also be responsible for performing pre- operation and post-operation inspection checks on equipment.
Duties
- Operates a gradall in connection with road construction and maintenance.
- Operates a compressor, generator, pump, and related equipment in connection with construction work.
- Operates all heavy equipment associated with roadwork.
- Coordinates and plans on-site work with the job supervisor or foreman.
- Reports equipment malfunctions to Heavy Equipment Supervisor or Maintenance District Supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge
- The methods, practices and operations of heavy road construction and maintenance equipment
- The hazards and safety precautions associated with the operations of the equipment
- General earthmoving and roadwork (underground drainage and utility lines)
Abilities
- Operate equipment such as rubber-tired hi-lifts, track hi-lifts, backhoes, excavators, pavers, road wideners, roller, tow-behind air compressors, road graders, skid-steer hi-lifts, forklifts, generators, high-volume pumps, gradall, snow groomers, etc.
- See clearly at twenty feet or more and judge distances and spatial relationships.
- Work under adverse/inclement weather conditions.
- Work various shifts as needed.
- Follow policies and procedures of the Department of Public Works.
- Carry out written and oral instructions.
Minimum Requirements
- Completion of an apprenticeship program AND four (4) years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment or
- Six (6) years’ experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
- Must show proof of a current, valid CDL License, Class B, at the time of application.

As required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Allegheny County is required to conduct an inquiry with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, which contains information about drivers with commercial driver’s licenses (CDL Drivers) who are covered by the FMCSA’s drug and alcohol program. This also includes drivers with commercial learner’s permits.
