Join our team as a Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) – Night Program and take the next step in your career as a leader on our overnight team.

This night shift opportunity offers 8-hour shifts (9:00 PM – 5:30 AM or 9:30 PM – 6:00 AM), working 5 shifts per pay, with a rotating every other weekend schedule and 3 holidays per year. In this role, you’ll serve as the go-to leader on shift, supporting critical areas including Blood Bank, Automated Testing Lab (ATL), and Stat Microbiology, while guiding team members and helping drive high-quality patient care.

The Lead MLT/LEAD MLS is a valued step in the UPMC Labs career ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. The Lead MLT starts at $25/hour. 
Responsibilities:
Supervisor Designate:
• Act as supervisor when needed.
• Communicate issues to higher management.
• Participate in administrative call rotation.
Competency:
• Help document staff competency.
• Complete tasks on time.
Operations:
• Perform Medical Technologist duties.
• Maintain and troubleshoot instruments.
• Review and report QC logs.
• Compile QA data and assist with evaluations.
• Help with staff scheduling.
Role Model:
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Represent the lab on committees.
• Follow reporting, appearance, and compliance policies.
• Monitor attendance and tardiness.
Purchasing and Inventory:
• Manage inventory levels.
• Prevent supply issues.
• Purchase supplies when needed.
Training and Development:
• Learn new procedures quickly.
• Stay updated on changes.
• Train and support staff.
• Develop and evaluate projects.
• Author and revise procedures.
• Deliver lectures and bench instruction.
 

  • Lead MLS:
    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR 

    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification, OR 
    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.
    • For NY locations/laboratories holding NY State Licensure: Four years clinical lab experience required.

  • Lead MLT:
    • Three years’ experience with certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Four years’ experience without certification required, including two years’ experience in the host laboratory preferred. 
       
      Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
      ASCP or equivalent certification in medical technology (MT) or categorical certification preferred. Certification as a Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) preferred (only for HLA Laboratory).
