Responsibilities:
- Serves as a role model of professional nursing practice by serving as a recognized unit leader in one or more of the following areas: clinical expertise, teacher, specialized resource nurse, and/or evidence based practice. Consistently gives appropriate feedback to all members of the health care team and participates in the nursing peer review process. Promotes change that enhances the quality of patient care and the unit environment. Serves on teams and leads successful teams as a part of daily practice. Demonstrates highly developed clinical assessment and analytical skills within the context of Relationship Based Care. Actively participates in shared governance at unit level and serves on hospital-wide councils.
- Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner. Practices solid communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care. - Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
- BSN preferred.
- Annual completion of one professional contribution selected from department, hospital, or system goals and approved by the Unit Director through UPMC's My Nursing Career Ladder, or certification.
- Certification is not required for nurses who hold a Master's in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
- If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of certification.
- Must obtain and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on the Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to achieve and maintain this level.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients served by the assigned unit.
- Possesses knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess, interpret, and respond to patients' age-specific needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients, families, physicians, advanced practice providers, leaders, staff, and other departments.
- Ability to work effectively in a complex environment, manage multiple priorities, and utilize specialized equipment.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead others in the application of the nursing process.
- Mobility, visual/manual dexterity, and physical stamina required for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located or through an applicable Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire and must include both didactic and skills demonstration components in accordance with AHA standards.

- Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal)
Current licensure must be maintained in accordance with state regulations. Employees working under a multistate NLC license who establish residency in the facility's state must apply for licensure in that state within 60 days of residency change.
