Fire Safety Specialist - Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Core responsibilities include:

  • Performs fire and life safety assessments of assigned buildings to identify potential fire hazards and fire code compliance issues.

  • Documents assessment findings and works with campus partners to remediate identified issues. 

  • Provides fire safety training for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of fire safety guidelines and community risk reduction initiatives. 

  • Conducts periodic fire/emergency evacuation drills. 

  • Manages the “hot work” and “fire protection system impairment” permit programs.

  • Participates in the EHS emergency “on call” program. 

  • Maintains accurate recordkeeping and provides status updates to the supervisor on a periodic basis. 

  • Provides support and assists other EHS professional staff in resolving safety and health issues (including indoor air quality investigations, etc.).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Safety, Engineering, or a related field. 

  • Current Fire Inspector I certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of fire safety experience or equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

  • Prior experience in a higher education setting, research facility, hospital system, or other campus environment preferred.

  • Experience with fire protection and life safety systems.

  • Experience in delivering fire safety education programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team environment.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

  • Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)

  • Pre-Employment drug and alcohol screening

Additional Information

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

  • Work posture: This position is operating on a hybrid schedule, with an on campus/in-office presence 3 days a week through December 31, 2026. Effective January 1, 2027, the expected work posture will transition to four (4) days on-site and one (1) day remote per week. Continuation of any hybrid work arrangement is not guaranteed and will be subject to further evaluation based on university policy, business needs, and institutional approval.
