Position Summary

The Mental Health Registered Nurse is responsible for carrying out prescribed medical treatments and therapies as determined by the Psychiatrist and other supervising positions within the Allegheny County Jail Medical Unit.

Duties

  • Administers all nursing-related processes and procedures to ensure quality nursing care which promotes, maintains and restores the well-being of all inmates/patients.
  • Accurately carries out physicians' orders in accordance with established nursing policies and procedures; administers medications, treatments and therapies.
  • Collaborates with medical staff while making rounds to validate the accurate interpretation and processing of diagnostic and therapeutic orders.
  • Assesses, plans, monitors, and evaluates the delivery of care and activity by utilizing the shift report, the medical record, direct observation, and feedback from others in providing care.
  • Assesses at risk inmates, determining any changes required in the treatment regime.
  • Documents all information required in accordance with state, facility, and nursing policies and guidelines accurately and in a timely 
  • Starts, monitors, and maintains IV's.
  • Responds to emergencies according to the scope of practice.
  • Ensures complete compliance with all regulations associated with the pharmacy and the dispensing of medication.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

  • Established policies and procedures regarding infection control
  • Nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern correctional medical and mental health care.
  • Policies and procedures regarding infection control.

  • Preparing and administering medications

  • Function independently and make informed decisions using sound professional judgement.
  • Be accountable for the quality of care and treatment provided to inmates.
  • Assess, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for providing quality care.
  • Communicate effectively with jail administrative and medical management, patients, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Work shifts within 24/7 facility.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a stressful environment.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited nursing program and current Pennsylvania RN licensure or Temporary Practice Permit. 

Experience working in a psychiatric hospital, behavioral health or correctional facility preferred.

Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant. Must have current CPR/BLS certification at time of appointment.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.
