The Roth Lab is seeking someone for the position of Wet Laboratory Research Technician III.  The successful candidate will investigate the function and impact of human DNA sequence variation as an integral part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of researchers.  The Wet Laboratory Research Technician III will work closely with other lab members on high priority experiments. The Wet Laboratory Research Technician III will be required to perform moderately complex research activities while playing an important role in facilitating day-to-day operations of the lab.

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.

Responsibilities: Human cell culture (routine handling, transfection, flow cytometry). Manipulating and screening libraries of bacterial and yeast cells. DNA isolation from cells, PCR amplification, and gel purification of libraries. Preparing and processing of DNA libraries for sequencing using high throughput sequencing platforms (e.g., Illumina and PacBio). Operating liquid- and plate-handing robotics. Maintaining laboratory stocks of media supplies, reagents, buffers, plates, etc. Performing routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. Assisting in analyzing and summarizing data for scientific communications (e.g., grant applications, peer-reviewed publications). Maintaining records of experimental data and communicating results to lab members. Reviewing pertinent scientific literature. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with 2 years relevant work experience or equivalent experience pursuing a Master’s degree. Must have an understanding of basic molecular biology and genetics. Must have Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular cloning techniques is essential (DNA/RNA isolation, restriction digestion, PCR amplification, purification, etc.). Experience with human cell culture OR the handing/manipulation of yeast is essential. Experience with the proper handling and genetic manipulation of bacteria is essential. Proficiency with basic computational tools used in biology (Excel, BLAST, primer design software) is essential. Experience with the preparation and quality control of sequencing libraries (such as Illumina  or PacBio) would be an asset. Experience with flow cytometry and FACS would be an asset.

Physical effort associated with wet lab work, i.e. standing while conducting experiments, sitting while working on computer, walking back and forth in the lab to sinks and microscopes, lifting packages less than 20lbs., etc.
