The Department of Agriculture is seeking a Weights Measures Inspector who enjoys hands-on work and solving real-world problems. In this role, you will help verify that scales, scanners, and packaged goods meet legal standards. Your inspections will protect both buyers and sellers while supporting fair business practices. This position ensures that weighing and measuring devices used in commerce are accurate and comply with state laws. Your work will support fair business practices, consumer protection, and consistent enforcement of regulations. As a Weights Measures Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

  • Device Inspections: Test scales, meters, and scanning systems to confirm accuracy and compliance with regulations
  • Package Reviews: Check packaged goods for correct weight, measure, or count and document any issues found
  • Fraud Investigation: Investigate violations, prepare prosecution materials, and testify when required
  • Sample Collection: Gather fuel and biofuel samples and complete required chain of custody documents
  • Report Preparation: Submit accurate inspection, mileage, and incident reports as required
  • Equipment Management: Use and maintain assigned tools, vehicles, and safety equipment properly

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is home headquartered for Erie County. In order to be home headquartered, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. 
  • Travel will be required to cover counties in Region 1, which includes Erie, Warren, McKean, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, Forest, Elk, Clarion, and Jefferson.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of public contact work, including one year of experience in weights and measures inspections; and graduation from high school; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the requisite knowledge and skills and abilities with weights and measures inspections.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid PA Class C non-commercial driver's license.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Experience with towing trailers.
  • Experience climbing up and down ladders.
