UPMC is hiring a Full-Time Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner to be the Director of Advanced Practice for Primary Care in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Position Specifics: Oversee the hiring and implementation of PAs and CRNPs in the primary care setting. Experience with a patient panel and RVU compensation plans is preferred. Purpose:
This position reports to the Vice President, Primary Care Service Line, Community Medicine Inc. The position maintains a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Chief Advanced Practice Officer (CAPO). Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are defined as primarily Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, and other advanced non-physician providers.

The successful candidate will be placed according to years and months of experience for employment purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Vice President, Primary Care Service Line in managing CMI APPs. Assist CMI leadership in more fully integrating APP operations, compensation, and associated policies and procedures into the organizational structure. Serve on appropriate primary care operational committees and councils under the direction of the Vice President, Primary Care Service Line. Provide operations support for APPs, physician collaborators/supervisors, and administration, as well as departmental and practice management within CMI primary care. Collaborate with physicians and administrative leadership to redefine the role of APPs within CMI primary care, including supporting practice models that improve access and support panel-based care.
  • Define and support APP programs to optimize clinical and financial benefit, compliance, and risk management within primary care. Establish and maintain system policies and procedures defining APP and physician collaborator/supervisor activities and responsibilities. Develop and implement standardized privileging and scope of practice for APPs. Assist CMI leadership in developing and managing focused recruitment and retention programs for APPs. Manage affiliations with APP schools and training programs. Manage UPMC-based clinical experiences for APP students. Manage educational opportunities for UPMC employed APPs, including continuing education aligned to primary care practice needs. Represent UPMC administration to APPs, State and Federal Boards and Associations, and APP educational and training programs. Direct and motivate clinical and administrative staff to support and execute upon the goals and initiatives defined in support of APP programs. Analyze developments within the APP disciplines, including changes in Commonwealth and federal programs and regulations, accrediting organizations, etc. Oversee all APPs within CMI primary care practices. Create and report key working productivity metrics to primary care leadership, including metrics relevant to primary care performance such as access and panel-based practice where applicable. Ensure all APPs are credentialed and in good standing at all times.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with the patients served as specified below
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
  • Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs
  • Provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures

This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

Licensure, Education, Certifications, and Clearances

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP): 

  • The successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program is required
  • BSN, MSN is preferred
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
  • Current state RN license and CRNP certification are required
  • National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
  • Current CPR certification is required

  • Act 34 Clearance required

Physician Assistant (PA):  

  • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required 
  • BS or MS candidate is preferred 
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred 
  • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required 
  • Current CPR certification is required 

  • Act 34 Clearance required 

Director Level :
Licensed as a Physician Assistant, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, or Nuse Midwife in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Minimum rank of Expert in the APP Clinical Career Ladder for internal applicants or comparable experience level for external applicants. Knowledge of advanced practice provider reimbursement regulations and standards, as well as documentation and collaboration/supervision requirements. Master's Degree preferred with a concentration in healthcare, management, and 8 years of equivalent experience.
