UPMC Vision Institute is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support its clinic at 1622 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This role is responsible for performing comprehensive patient workups in a low vision clinic, including obtaining patient histories and conducting refractions, as well as assisting with advanced ophthalmic imaging such as OCT, fundus photography, and visual field testing. The Ophthalmic Technician will work closely with providers and clinical staff to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a collaborative environment. This position operates during daylight hours, Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., based on clinic needs. Occasional travel (approximately 5%) to other UPMC sites may be required to support staffing and operational demands.
Responsibilities:
 
  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. 
  • Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred. 
  • Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred. 
  • Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Valid CPR certification
     
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
