Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) | Be the Hub of a High-Performing Team

Bring your organization, communication, and customer-service skills to a fast-paced surgical environment where every detail matters. As a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC), you’ll play a vital role in keeping operations running smoothly while supporting patients, families, and clinical teams.

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday with rotating Saturdays
  • Variable rotating shifts:
    • 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
    • 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
    • 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
    • 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM

About the Role

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) plays a key role in ensuring seamless daily operations at the OR front desk. In this highly visible position, you’ll serve as the communication hub—managing incoming calls, coordinating patient flow, updating surgical schedules, and facilitating real-time communication between clinical staff, surgeons, and ancillary departments to keep everything running efficiently.

What You’ll Do

Create a Welcoming Experience

  • Greet patients, families, visitors, and staff with professionalism and compassion
  • Help maintain a calm, organized, and patient-centered environment

Coordinate & Communicate

  • Manage incoming calls, paging, mail, and unit communication
  • Coordinate patient flow, procedures, and transportation
  • Update surgical schedules and tracking systems (Bedboard/Teletracking)
  • Communicate updates clearly with nurses, physicians, and leadership

Support Clinical Operations

  • Enter and relay physician orders accurately and timely
  • Maintain patient charts and medical records per policy
  • Ensure patient identification and documentation accuracy

Keep the Unit Running Smoothly

  • Monitor and restock supplies and family lounge areas
  • Perform audits, maintain logs, and reconcile charges
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate repairs for office equipment

Be a Team Player

  • Build strong, professional relationships across disciplines
  • Support process improvements and department initiatives
  • Assist with onboarding and serve as a resource for new staff

What We’re Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Computer proficiency required; healthcare systems experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Certified Health Unit Secretary course (preferred, not required)

Additional Details

  • May assist with distribution of medications to nursing staff (no administration)
  • Must adhere to HIPAA, safety, and hospital policies
  • Act 34 Clearance required
