In this position, you will focus on maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment used in daily transportation operations.  The work supports safe, reliable performance of engines, systems, and tools across the fleet.  As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties: 

  • Equipment Repair: Perform repairs on vehicles and machinery by replacing parts, fixing systems, and completing mechanical adjustments
  • Preventative Care: Carry out routine maintenance on engines, systems, and equipment to reduce wear and prevent breakdowns
  • System Diagnostics: Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and methods to determine effective repair steps
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct official state inspections, perform required repairs, and document findings and results accurately
  • Workplace Safety: Maintain a clean and safe work area while following all required safety procedures and protective measures

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
  • Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements, weather conditions, and operational needs. 
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission (E) removed or equivalent. 
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
