Sign-On Bonus:

The Histotechnician is a valued step in UPMC’s Laboratory Career Ladder. Final placement will be based on education and experience.
Responsibilities:
- Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location, including minute biopsy protocols.
- Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
- Ensure all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections, including no folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.
- Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
- Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area. Maintain instruments in accordance with quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
- Supports the academic mission of the department.
- Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies. Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to the Histology workflow.
- Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures, and work practices.
Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR
an Associate's degree and 1 year clinical Histology experience OR
at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/ university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry and 1 year clinical Histology experience OR
3 years' experience working as a Histology Lab Technician or equivalent without certification.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Histotechnician HT (ASCP) certification preferred
