About the Program

UPMC’s Student Nurse Internship (SNI) program allows you to put your education into practice by working side-by-side with a preceptor.  This is a temporary 10-week paid opportunity during the Summer of 2027.

During the internship you will have the opportunity to:

·       Work one-on-one with a trained preceptor to see a day in the life of a nurse at UPMC working in outpatient oncology, inpatient oncology, radiation oncology, and specialty areas of oncologic patient care

·       Participate in supplementary educational sessions to continue your learning journey

·       Build your confidence as a future nurse

·       Work at both inpatient and outpatient settings for the summer (*Assignment shared at time of offer)

·       Shadow at least one additional area of nursing at your hospital placement

·       Work up to 40 hours/week (*SNIs follow their preceptor’s schedule; we understand obligations may not permit you to work a full-time schedule, we can accommodate!)

·       Apply to system-wide Graduate Nurse opportunities at UPMC before you even leave the summer program

·       Network with UPMC Nursing Leadership and receive mentorship

·       Give back to the community

·       Make an impact on patient care and Life Changing Medicine

Focusing on Oncology you will have the opportunity to:

·       Gain exposure to the unique role of oncology nurses across the cancer care continuum, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and supportive care.

·       Participate in a multidisciplinary learning experience by engaging with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, social workers, nurse navigators, dietitians, surgical oncology, palliative care, and other members of the oncology care team.

·       Observe how collaborative, patient-centered care is coordinated across outpatient, inpatient, infusion, radiation oncology, and supportive care settings.

·       Develop an understanding of the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of patients with cancer and their families while witnessing the impact of compassionate, evidence-based oncology nursing.

·       Explore career pathways within oncology nursing and gain insight into specialized areas including infusion therapy, symptom management, survivorship, research, quality and safety, education, and patient experience.
