Learning Disabilities Association of Pennsylvania - Early Literacy Tutor
The Learning Disabilities Association of Pennsylvania (LDA of PA), www.ldaofpa.org is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting individuals with learning disabilities and those struggling to read. We offer free reading instruction to students in need through Early Literacy and 1-on-1 Reading Intervention programs. Through these evidence-based reading techniques empower students to develop foundational literacy skills and succeed in school. We focus on providing accessible and equitable support to help children reach their full potential in a nurturing environment.
LDA of PA is seeking multiple dedicated Early Literacy Reading Tutors to join our team. Make a lasting impact in the lives of Kindergarten through 2nd grade students by supporting their reading development in small group settings.
Role Overview
Tutors provide reading support to small groups of up to 4 students per session. You’ll work with children reading at Kindergarten to 2nd grade levels, delivering multi-sensory 45-minute tutoring sessions that foster growth and confidence in foundational literacy skills.
Training and Approach
All tutors receive paid reading tutoring training. We use a modified version of Wilson Fundations reading techniques. Our organization uses a science of reading approach with multi-sensory methods to ensure every child receives effective, research-based instruction. Tutoring is provided at no cost to students.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead small group sessions (up to 4 students) for 45 minutes each with 15 minutes of prep time
- Support K-2nd grade reading levels
- Follow Wilson Fundations and multi-sensory teaching practices
- Track student progress and encourage a positive learning environment
Work Schedule
Tutors work approximately 10 hours per week, with opportunities for additional hours and locations. We are looking for tutors to work at two specific locations:
- Carmalt Elementary, 1550 Breining St, Pittsburgh, PA 15226. Tuesday and Thursday, 11am to 2pm.
- St Benedict the Moor School, 631 Watt St, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Monday and Wednesday, 9am-11am.
Compensation and Benefits
- Starting at $20 per hour, based on experience
- Paid reading tutoring training - roughly 8 hours
- Advancement opportunities: tutors in good standing may enter our 1-on-1 Reading Interventionist Training Program.
Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- Current clearances required:
- PA Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33)
- PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34)
- FBI Fingerprint-Based Federal Criminal Record Check (Act 114)
- Mandatory Reporting
- Reliable transportation to tutoring sites
