About LDA of PA
The Learning Disabilities Association of Pennsylvania (LDA of PA) is a PA-based nonprofit (www.ldaofpa.org) that gives kids in the region's lowest-income and underserved neighborhoods free, high-quality reading help grounded in the science of reading. We deliver small-group early-literacy instruction and 1-on-1 intervention taught by trained tutors, and we partner with community institutions to reach the kids who most need academic support.
About the Washington County Program
LDA of PA has partnered with the Washington County Courts LEADER Program (Leadership Enhanced Attitude Development Educational Rehabilitation) and its companion Jobs Program. This is a highly structured after-school and evening initiative program that support court-involved youth as they work to stay on track in school, build employable skills, and re-engage with their communities. Program staff have identified academic support as one of the biggest gaps for the youth they serve: most participants are behind on assignments, and the program's non-teaching staff aren't positioned to provide the individualized homework help these students need.
That's where you come in. We're hiring a small cohort of tutors to provide consistent, one-on-one homework help to LEADER participants throughout the AY26–27 school year.
About the Promise Center of Homewood
The Promise Center of Homewood is a community-driven organization that offers health resources, educational empowerment for youth, and neighborhood development in the community of Homewood.
What you'll do
- Provide one-on-one or small group homework help to participants in core academic subjects such as reading, writing, math, and science.
- Coach students in study skills, organization, and academic confidence. The participants need to see themselves as capable learners as much as they need help with the assignment in front of them.
- Build consistent, respectful mentoring relationships with the youth you tutor. Consistency is what makes this work.
- Work alongside on-site staff who supervise all sessions and handle behavior management. You are never expected to manage discipline. Your focus is academic support.
- Coordinate with LDA staff on scheduling, session logs, and any student concerns.
- Complete required training, including LDA's structured literacy orientation and general tutoring.
Required:
- Availability for weekday evenings, Monday–Thursday.
- Washington County Hours: 5-7pm
- The Promise Center Hours: 4-6pm
- Willingness to complete required background clearances (see below).
- Reliable transportation to the program facility in Washington, PA OR Homewood, PA.
- Strong academic standing and the ability to explain core high-school-level content in reading, writing, math, or science.
- Patience, warmth, and the maturity to work with youth who have experienced significant educational disruption.
This is a youth-serving role, so all tutors are required to complete the required PA clearances before working with students:
- PA Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33)
- PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34)
- FBI Fingerprint-Based Federal Criminal Record Check (Act 114)
- Mandatory Reporter Training
Training & support
- LDA of PA will provide training, in addition to training offered by onsite staff.
- LDA of PA covers 100% of clearance costs. You'll pay the fees up front and be reimbursed in your first paycheck— save your receipts.
Compensation & logistics
- Wage: starting at $20.00/hour, paid by LDA of PA on a monthly schedule.
- Worker classification: W2
- Hours: 8 hours a week
