Join the UPMC Vision Institute – St. Margaret as an Ophthalmic Technician and become part of a dedicated team providing exceptional eye care services to patients throughout the Pittsburgh region. In this role, you will work closely with ophthalmologists and clinical staff to support patient examinations, perform ophthalmic testing and diagnostic procedures, document patient information, and deliver outstanding patient-centered care in a fast-paced specialty practice. This position is based at UPMC Vision Institute – St. Margaret, 100 Delafield Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15215 and offers full-time daylight hours with staggered shifts of 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, or until the last patient. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the Ophthalmic Technician/ Imaging Career Ladder, based on their individual experience and education.
Responsibilities:
 

  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  •  Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred. 
  • Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
  •  Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Valid CPR certification
     
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
