Position Summary

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council seeks a strategic, relationship-centered Membership Manager to steward, grow, and continuously improve its membership program.

Following the redesign and relaunch of the membership program, the Membership Manager will build upon an established strategic foundation by cultivating an engaged community of artists, arts organizations, and creative professionals. This role is responsible for delivering an exceptional member experience, strengthening relationships, managing day-to-day membership operations, evaluating program performance, and identifying opportunities for thoughtful, sustainable growth.

The Membership Manager serves as both a community builder and program manager bringing together people, partnerships, programming, and systems to ensure the membership program remains valuable, relevant, and financially sustainable.

Through an online community, educational programming, networking opportunities, strategic partnerships, and exclusive member benefits, the program fosters a collaborative community where members can connect, learn, create, and thrive together.

The Membership Manager will steward and grow an established foundation, ensuring it continues to evolve alongside the needs of the creative community while advancing the Arts Council's mission and strategic priorities.

Primary Responsibilities

Membership Growth & Stewardship

  • Implement and advance the Arts Council's membership strategy.
  • Develop and execute annual plans to achieve membership recruitment, engagement, retention, renewal, and revenue goals.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen member value and support sustainable program growth.
  • Evaluate membership trends and recommend strategic improvements.
  • Partner with leadership to establish annual priorities and success metrics.

Member Experience & Community Building

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for Arts Council members.
  • Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging membership community.
  • Design and implement onboarding experiences that help new members quickly connect and engage.
  • Foster meaningful relationships among artists, arts organizations, and creative professionals.
  • Encourage member participation through storytelling, recognition, networking opportunities, and community-building initiatives.
  • Respond to member questions, concerns, and feedback with professionalism and care.

Program & Event Management

  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate membership programming, including networking events, educational workshops, office hours, virtual gatherings, and community discussions.
  • Develop an annual membership programming calendar aligned with member needs and organizational priorities.
  • Coordinate logistics, communications, speakers, facilitators, and event evaluation.
  • Continuously refine programming based on participation data and member feedback.

Online Community Management

  • Manage and optimize the Arts Council's online membership platform.
  • Facilitate meaningful conversations and encourage member-to-member connections.
  • Maintain member directories, resource libraries, and online content.
  • Moderate discussions in accordance with the Arts Council's Community Agreements and Code of Conduct.
  • Introduce new features, engagement opportunities, and best practices that strengthen the online community experience.

Partnerships & Member Benefits

  • Steward relationships with member benefit partners and collaborators.
  • Coordinate delivery of member benefits and ensure a high-quality member experience.
  • Regularly evaluate benefit utilization, relevance, and effectiveness.
  • Identify opportunities to expand partnerships that increase value for members and strengthen the Arts Council's network.

Marketing & Member Recruitment

  • Partner with the Communications team to promote the membership program.
  • Develop campaigns that clearly communicate the value of membership.
  • Support recruitment through community outreach, referrals, partnerships, events, and storytelling.
  • Identify opportunities to convert program participants, event attendees, and community members into active members.

Operations & Administration

  • Manage membership records, renewals, and member communications.
  • Ensure membership information remains accurate across all systems and platforms.
  • Oversee membership-related workflows, documentation, and administrative processes.
  • Coordinate membership payment processing and reporting.
  • Continuously improve systems and processes that support an exceptional member experience.

Data, Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor key performance indicators including:
  • Membership growth
  • Recruitment and renewal rates
  • Member engagement
  • Event participation
  • Benefit utilization
  • Member satisfaction
  • Membership revenue
  • Collect and synthesize member feedback through surveys, interviews, and community conversations.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for leadership and the Board.
  • Use data and member insights to continuously improve the membership experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3–5 years of experience in membership management, community engagement, nonprofit programs, association management, customer success, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing programs from implementation through evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and facilitation skills.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Experience using CRM, membership management, or community platforms.
  • Experience analyzing data and translating insights into actionable improvements.

Preferred

  • Experience working in the arts, nonprofit, or cultural sector.
  • Experience managing online communities or membership platforms.
  • Experience planning and facilitating community events.
  • Experience building partnerships across sectors.
  • Familiarity with Bloomerang, Qgiv, Circle, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with member or audience engagement analytics and reporting.

  • Build strong, trusted relationships with members, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Increase participation in membership programming and online community activities.
  • Establish consistent systems for evaluating member engagement, satisfaction, and program performance.
  • Use member feedback and data to implement meaningful improvements.
  • Strengthen the value, visibility, and long-term sustainability of the membership program.

Working at the Arts Council 

Benefits 

This is a full-time, exempt salaried position. Occasional weekend and evening work may be necessary. Salary is posted at $50,000-60,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, vision, and dental insurance. Unlimited paid time off and thirteen (13) holidays. The Arts Council offers a Simple IRA with a 3% company match. 

Primarily Remote Workplace 

Work for this position primarily occurs remotely, with required in-person staff meetings once a week. It is important for employees to have access to reliable transportation, whether that be a personal vehicle or consistent access to public transportation. Employees are provided an organization-issued laptop for the duration of employment. When working remotely, you are expected to maintain a high-speed Internet connection supporting collaborative work, such as Zoom meetings. All full-time staff members receive a monthly stipend to support remote work.
