The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic position with the Department of Transportation, Chester County offers a hands-on role that keeps essential equipment running smoothly. This position focuses on maintaining and repairing diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. The role supports daily operations by completing inspections, diagnosing problems, and performing preventative maintenance. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair: Fix and overhaul vehicles and machinery including engines, brakes, electrical parts, and mechanical systems
  • Preventative Work: Carry out routine maintenance such as diagnostics, tune-ups, and part replacements
  • Safety Inspections: Complete official state safety and emissions inspections and ensure vehicles meet required standards
  • Diagnostic Tasks: Identify equipment issues using diagnostic tools and determine appropriate repair methods
  • Shop Maintenance: Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow proper safety procedures at all times

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires employees to possess a valid Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.  
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.

Additional Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of an Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
