Purpose:
The Pharmacy Technician, Trainee provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by primarily assisting with the organization, stocking, and distribution of medications while under the direct supervisor of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician, Trainee services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
Responsibilities:

  • Assist with filling medication orders using proper labeling, counting, stocking, and preparation techniques. Initial and date products as required and ensure the correct oral medications are prepared for the correct patient at the appropriate time.
  • Participate in medication distribution, including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and controlled substances, in accordance with department policies and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Retrieve discontinued medications and return them to the appropriate pharmacy area, processing credits when necessary.
  • Develop and maintain positive, productive service relationships throughout the medication distribution process.
  • Communicate with hospital personnel, patients, and visitors by telephone, in person, or in writing, referring all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
  • Ensure medications are safely and securely stored in accordance with applicable Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment and practice appropriate hand hygiene in the pharmacy and patient care units.
  • Use computer systems to process and maintain patient information and records and complete required documentation, including eyewash logs, refrigerator logs, and perpetual inventory logs.
  • Finalize sales using the cash register and follow established cash-handling policies and procedures.
  • Comply with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA requirements, as well as PBM contracting requirements such as FWA and CMS requirements.
  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • For PA- Register as a Pharmacy Trainee with the State Board of Pharmacy


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration required for all PA locationsIf an individual has a Pharmacy Intern license, they do not need to register with the State of PARxPartners specific BU criteria require Driver’s License and Automotive insurance Registration is dependent on the state they work in.
