Position: Full-Time Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist
Department: Automated Testing Lab
Location: UPMC Passavant
Shifts: 40 hours per week; 1 weekend per 6-week schedule & 2 rotating holidays required.
Rate of pay will be determined based upon qualifications, experience, and education.
Responsibilities
- Perform all duties of a Medical Laboratory Scientist while serving as a technical and operational lead within the laboratory.
- Function as a Supervisor Designate, providing leadership support and assuming supervisory responsibilities in the absence of laboratory leadership.
- Coordinate daily workflow, evaluate operational issues, and escalate concerns to laboratory leadership as appropriate.
- Assist with staff scheduling, work assignments, and maintaining efficient laboratory operations.
- Monitor laboratory instrumentation, ensure required maintenance is completed, and troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Review quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities to support accurate and compliant laboratory operations.
- Compile and analyze quality data, prepare reports, and assist with process improvement initiatives.
- Support employee competency assessments and provide mentoring, guidance, and technical expertise to laboratory staff.
- Train and onboard new employees, students, and other laboratory personnel.
- Serve as a technical resource for testing procedures, methodologies, and result interpretation.
- Participate in the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new testing methods, procedures, and reagent systems.
- Develop, revise, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and technical documentation in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Monitor inventory levels, coordinate supply management activities, and assist with purchasing as needed.
- Represent the laboratory in interdisciplinary meetings, committees, and organizational initiatives.
- Promote a culture of quality, safety, compliance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program
- OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification
- OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory
- For NY locations/laboratories holding NY State Licensure: Four years clinical lab experience required.
- 3 years of experience preferred
- Strong communication skills
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- ASCP or equivalent certification in medical technology (MT) or categorical certification preferred
- Certification as a Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) preferred (only for HLA Laboratory)
