Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic for the Department of Transportation in Luzerne County, you will take on essential repair and maintenance responsibilities that support everyday highway operations. This position focuses on repairing, maintaining, and inspecting a fleet of diesel and construction equipment to support county maintenance operations. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

• Vehicle Repair: Repair and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment by replacing parts and performing mechanical adjustments
• Preventative Maintenance: Carry out diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and system repairs to ensure safe and efficient operation
• State Inspections: Conduct official state safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation
• Diagnostic Work: Identify equipment problems using diagnostic tools and repair motorized hand equipment such as compressors and chain saws
• Safety Practices: Maintain a clean work area, follow safety procedures, report injuries, and take steps to avoid hazards
• Field Adjustments: Perform routine adjustments, minor repairs, and assist other mechanics with major repairs when needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Schedule is subject to change based on weather/season. Winter shifts are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

• This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brake restriction (L) and Manual Transmission restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
• This position requires employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Additional Requirements:

• This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.  
• This position requires employees to possess a valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification.    
• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
