Assistant Professor of Biochemistry
The Science Department at Chatham University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biochemistry to begin August 9, 2027. This is a 9-month faculty appointment.
We seek a teacher-scholar with expertise in biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, chemical biology, molecular biology or a closely related field who can provide leadership in undergraduate and graduate biochemistry instruction and contribute to an ACS-accredited/ACS-approved chemistry and biochemistry curriculum.
The successful candidate will support the department’s biochemistry sequence, associated laboratory instruction, student research, and related coursework in general and organic chemistry, cell biology, or molecular biology, depending on expertise. This position supports multiple majors, graduate programs, pre-health pathways, and ACS expectations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Teach an annual load of 18 credits (approximately 6 courses).
- Teach undergraduate and graduate biochemistry courses, including Biochemistry I and/or Biochemistry II, and associated laboratories.
- Contribute to related courses in general and/or organic chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, or general science, depending on expertise and departmental need.
- Maintain a productive scholarly agenda appropriate to a primarily undergraduate institution.
- Develop and maintain an active research program involving undergraduate students and, where appropriate, graduate students.
- Advise undergraduate students in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, pre-health, and related pathways.
- Mentor students in research, academic planning, and preparation for graduate or professional programs.
- Support curriculum development, assessment, advising, departmental and University service.
- Contribute to the continued strength of the department’s ACS-accredited/ACS-approved chemistry and biochemistry programs.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
- Demonstrated potential for effective undergraduate and/or graduate teaching.
- Ability to teach biochemistry lecture and laboratory courses.
- Commitment to inclusive, student-centered teaching, advising, and mentoring.
- Ability to develop a sustainable research program involving students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as the instructor of record for biochemistry or molecular biology courses.
- Experience teaching laboratory-based courses.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate student research.
- Postdoctoral or industry-equivalent experience.
- Research expertise that complements existing departmental strengths
- Ability to contribute to general chemistry, genetics ,organic chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or health-related curricula.
- Familiarity with ACS expectations for chemistry and biochemistry programs.
