UPMC Vision Institute is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support the Comprehensive Eye Service team at 1622 Locust Street, Ground Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This position offers daylight hours Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with start times varying based on clinic schedules. The Ophthalmic Technician will work alongside ophthalmologists and clinical staff to provide exceptional patient care while performing a variety of diagnostic testing and clinical support duties. The Comprehensive Eye Service cares for patients with a wide range of ophthalmic needs, including follow-up visits from the Urgent Eye Care Center, diabetic eye examinations, comprehensive eye exams, and cataract evaluations. Candidates should be detail-oriented, patient-focused, and adaptable, as flexibility to support other departments within the building as needed is required. Travel to other UPMC locations is minimal, accounting for less than 5% of the role. Responsibilities:
- History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate. Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus Refractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
- Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each. Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils. Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.
- Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day. Travel to other clinical sites.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
- Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
- Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Valid CPR certification
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Act 34
