This position ensures safe, clear, and well-maintained tunnel operations that support steady traffic flow. It involves maintenance work, monitoring, and incident response to keep tunnels functioning properly. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:

• Tunnel Maintenance: Clean facilities, maintain drainage systems, and carry out repairs on tunnel structures
• Incident Response: Assist during traffic incidents with vehicle removal, debris clearing, and basic motorist support
• Condition Monitoring: Observe tunnel operations for traffic flow, CO levels, and safety hazards
• Communication Duties: Relay clear information to coworkers and responders using radio, phone, and direct communication
• Equipment Operation: Handle trucks, washing equipment, gates, and towing apparatus safely and efficiently
• Work Zone Setup: Place cones, signs, and protective devices to secure work areas

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time position within a rotating 24/7 operational environment.
• Work hours vary based on operational needs. Shifts can range from the following and will include a 30-minute lunch: 
  • 9:30 PM–5:30 AM 
  • 5:30 AM–1:30 PM 
  • 1:30 PM–9:30 PM
• Travel and overtime are required.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,141 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
• All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
• All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
