Patient Care Technician Specialist
Looking for a patient care role with a great weekday schedule? UPMC Mercy is seeking a full-time Patient Care Technician Specialist to join the PM&R Injection and Outpatient Testing team at the Mercy Pavilion. Enjoy a Monday through Friday schedule with variable start times and no weekends, holidays, or on-call shifts while providing hands-on support to patients and the clinical team. Phlebotomy and IV skills are preferred.
Purpose
The Patient Care Technician Specialist plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care by assisting nurses and other healthcare providers with clinical and personal care needs. Responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), collecting specimens, performing phlebotomy and IV-related procedures, and maintaining a clean and safe patient environment.
In addition to standard PCT competencies, the Patient Care Technician Specialist will achieve and maintain competency in at least one advanced skill based on department operational needs, including basic arrhythmia, complex wound care, 12-lead EKG, or NG tube clamping and removal.
Responsibilities
- Provides compassionate, patient-centered care while demonstrating an understanding of cultural diversity, workplace safety, and professionalism.
- Performs core PCT responsibilities, including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, turning, and repositioning patients.
- Obtains vital signs, weights, intake and output, blood glucose and other point-of-care testing, and collects patient specimens.
- Applies and reapplies telemetry monitors and assists with HAC and PSI prevention measures, including TEDs and SCDs.
- Performs simple dressing changes, bladder scans, restraint placement and removal, and specimen collection.
- Performs required advanced competencies, including IV insertion and removal, Foley catheter insertion and removal, straight catheterization, and phlebotomy.
- Achieves and maintains competency in at least one additional advanced skill based on department needs, including basic arrhythmia, complex wound care, 12-lead EKG, or NG tube clamping and removal.
- Provides instruction to patients and families under the direction of the RN.
- Responds to call lights and telephones, assists with meal trays, transports patients, and supports other unit activities as needed.
- Transports cardiac-monitored patients within the hospital and completes department clerical functions as needed.
- Documents patient care in the medical record according to established procedures.
- Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department and supports a safe patient care environment.
- Participates in department projects and quality initiatives and communicates learning or support needs to leadership.
- May enter areas where medications are stored or transport medications with patients from one department to another as required.
•High school diploma or GED. •Must also have either a)2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician - Senior title, OR b)1 year of experience (defined above) and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, or c)1 year of experience (defined above) and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field. •Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire• Successful completion of patient care technician specialist class• Successful completion of eRecord training. •Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. •May require successful completion of the appropriate UPMC cardiac rhythm course as determined by organizational guidelines and unit-based clinical operations.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
