UPMC University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a Full-Time Access Improvement Specialist.
Hours: Monday through Friday, daylight hours. There is flexibility with start and end times.
Location: Hybrid opportunity with occasional on-site meetings required dependent on business needs.

Purpose:
The Access Improvement Specialist plays a key role in advancing enterprise patient access strategy through workflow optimization, governance leadership, and data-driven performance improvement. This role partners across clinical, operational, and technical teams to translate organizational priorities into standardized, scalable access solutions that enhance patient experience, improve capacity utilization, and support system growth. As a bridge between strategy and execution, the specialist leads cross-functional initiatives, supports access governance structures, and drives adoption of best practices to ensure consistent, efficient, and sustainable access operations across the health system.
Responsibilities:
- Patient Access & Experience Optimization
- Ensure access design and scheduling workflows align with patient-centered care and access goals.
- Translate operational and clinical priorities into scalable access solutions.
- Identify opportunities to improve access efficiency and resource utilization.
- Support standardization of workflows and template design across the system.
- Strategic Consultation & Stakeholder Partnership
- Serve as a strategic advisor to operational and clinical leaders on access design.
- Partner with stakeholders to define requirements and align on enterprise standards. • Lead cross-functional discussions to translate business needs into workflow changes.
- Build strong partnerships across operations, IT, and clinical leadership.
- Access Transformation & Governance Leadership
- Lead or co-lead enterprise and service line access initiatives.
- Support Access Governance structures, including facilitation and prioritization processes.
- Translate access strategy into standardized workflows and templates.
- Use data and metrics to identify access gaps and monitor initiative success.
- Lead cross-functional teams to drive implementation and remove barriers.
- Technical & Operational Responsibilities • Design and optimize scheduling templates, decision trees, and workflows.
- Translate operational requirements into system build specifications.
- Support testing, validation, and rollout of access-related system changes.
- Maintain documentation of standards and governance decisions.
- Thought Leadership & Professional Growth
- Demonstrate expertise in access optimization and workflow design.
- Build capabilities in governance, analytics, and change management.
- Mentor team members on access design and stakeholder engagement.
- Contribute to organizational knowledge sharing and best practices.
- Bachelor’s Degree and two years of relevant business experience.
- OR High School Diploma with Three Years of relevant experience required.
- Knowledge and good understanding of all products and benefit designs of UPMC Health.
- Knowledge of clinical workflow and JCAHO and DOH regulations are preferred.
- Attention to detail and accuracy is critical to the success of this position, with demonstrated competency in customer orientation and the ability to deal with ambiguity.
